Excerpt

Maine, one of the six New England states, is located in the far northeast corner of the United States. Given the shape of North America, Maine is the easternmost state in the lower 48 states. Maine has an extensive southern coast along the Atlantic Ocean; shares a border with New Hampshire to the east; and otherwise is surrounded by the Canadian provinces of Ontario and New Brunswick. The White Mountains, a part of the Appalachian Mountains that grace the landscape of the eastern U.S. from Maine to Georgia, cover parts of central New Hampshire and western Maine. The beginning of the Appalachian Trail, a hiking trail that extends from Maine to Georgia, is on Mount Katahdin, the highest peak in Maine.
