Henry Ford?s father expected him to take over the family farm eventually, but Ford hated farm work. Instead, he left home to work as an apprentice machinist in 1879 in the city of Detroit. Initially, he was an apprentice at James F. Flower & Bros. Later, he was an apprentice at the Detroit Dry Dock Co. Ford eventually returned to work on the family farm in 1882. He became skilled at operating the Westinghouse portable steam engine. As a result, he was later hired by Westinghouse to service steam engines.
