Lesson Excerpt
Depending on their reading level, the children should read through the story themselves. Activity A helps them to identify the different types of calculations made during the course of the day. Activity B gives them some practice applying the different arithmetic operations themselves.
A story to read:
“Marcy, you need to do your math homework.”
“But Mom, I have to go and practice, all the others are going to be there. You promised I could take some cookies along too, remember?”
“That’s right! I forgot. OK, just remember to do the homework when you get back. The cookies are in the cupboard. How many do you need?
“Well, there’s Billy and Tim and Sally and George, that’s 4, 5 with me. Peter said he would come too, and bring 3 of his friends. Let’s see, that makes 9. Could we have 3 each?”
